MUNCHEN part 2: SILENT WITNESS

If you travel to Munich don’t forget to visit this silent witness of cruelty,
the concentration camp of Dachau.

Dachau was the first concentration camp built in Germany and stayed in use for 12 years (!). It was originally built for 6000 prisoners but at the end of World War II more than 63,000 prisoners lived in the Dachau concentration camp and its subsidiary camps.  The living conditions were catastrophic.

The new visitors centre welcomes you in a very serene way. You enter the site through the gate with the words ‘arbeit macht frei’. The permanent exhibition is in the former maintenance building. The 2 barracks are reconstructed. The crematorium and gas chamber are still intact. Needs no more explanation ... it’s a part of history no-one ever should forget!
